Kisumu county workers to strikr over arrears dating back to August

Kisumu branch Chairman Boaz Opiyo has alleged that the delay in salary payments is a deliberate tactic by the county government. Opiyo announced that workers will hold a salary parade outside the employers’ offices on Friday.

“We will not strike but will parade to compel the county government to pay us,” he stated.

He pointed out that the county executive has previously blamed the delay on the national treasury’s failure to release funds. However, Opiyo claimed they have verified that the treasury disbursed funds to the county on Wednesday, September 25.

“Why are we not being paid when the national government has released funds to the counties?” he questioned.

Opiyo highlighted the mounting frustrations faced by workers, including difficulties in paying rent, school fees, and providing for their families due to the salary delays.

Growing Financial Strain

In a press briefing at the Union offices in Kisumu on Thursday, Opiyo expressed concern over the impact of non-payment of bank loans on workers.

“Workers are facing hefty penalties imposed by banks due to late loan repayments,” he said.

He criticized the county government for neglecting the welfare of employees who work hard to serve the community. Opiyo also raised concerns about the ongoing disregard for a Collective Bargaining Agreement that has yet to be implemented after several years

He urged workers not to report to work on Friday but instead gather at Prosperity House for the salary parade.

“The parade will continue into next week if salaries are not disbursed,” he warned.

This protest is expected to disrupt essential services, including revenue collection, inspectorate duties, fire brigade operations, and environmental services.
