Police have arrested a suspect linked to the murder of a General Service Unit (GSU) officer, Calvince Ouma Omondi, who was killed on Sunday night in Kisumu’s Manyatta slums. The suspect, Ronald ‘Ronny’ Liwind, was apprehended during a raid at his rural home in Rarieda, Siaya County. Authorities are still searching for an accomplice who remains at large.
Omondi, an officer stationed in Turkwel, Turkana County, was on leave when he was fatally stabbed. He hailed from Kolwa, Kisumu East Sub County.
According to police reports, Omondi was with friends when the attack occurred. A source, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that the group was in a vehicle escorting a female friend to her home in Manyatta. At some point, one of the men in the group asked the driver to stop so he could relieve himself.
It was during this stop that Omondi was attacked. He reportedly intervened when his friend, who had stepped out of the vehicle, was assaulted. In the ensuing confrontation, Omondi was stabbed in the chest and died on the spot.
A Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officer, who was among Omondi’s companions, sustained injuries during the altercation before the attackers fled the scene.
