On Tuesday afternoon, a tragic accident on the Londiani-Muhoroni Road in the Pangala area of Kisumu Ndogo claimed the lives of at least 10 people and left three others critically injured. The collision involved a matatu and a trailer.
According to eyewitnesses, the trailer driver, heading towards Londiani, lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off its lane and collide head-on with the matatu, which was en route to Kisumu.
Nine occupants of the matatu, including the driver, died instantly, while another victim succumbed to injuries while receiving medical attention. The three survivors, comprising a child and two adults, sustained severe injuries. The trailer's driver survived but fled the scene immediately after the accident.
A police report stated, "The unidentified driver, who escaped after the accident, was operating motor vehicle registration number KCG 089F/ZF 6346 Mercedes Benz from Kipsitet General direction at approximately 1:30 PM. Upon reaching Kisumu Ndogo along the Muhoroni-Kipsitet Road, about 6 kilometers north of the station, he lost control of the vehicle."
The report continued,
"The trailer left its lane and collided with motor vehicle registration number KCS 415z Toyota matatu, driven by Mr. Meshack Otieno, who died on the spot."
Assistant Chief Gregory Kemei of Kapchebwai sub-location confirmed that the survivors were taken to Muhoroni sub-county hospital for treatment.
The bodies of the deceased are currently at St. Vincent Mission Hospital mortuary in Muhoroni, awaiting identification.
Police have since cleared the accident scene, and the wreckages of the vehicles have been towed to Kipsitet Police Station for inspection. A manhunt for the trailer driver is ongoing.
