Boda Boda Union on a mission to curb motorcycle theft

The Bodaboda Association of Kenya (BAK) has launched an initiative to tackle the growing problem of motorbike theft in the Nyanza region. BAK will lead the efforts in collaboration with partners, including the National Police Service, to disrupt organized crime syndicates involved in stealing motorbikes in Kenya and smuggling them across borders into Uganda and Tanzania.

BAK President Kevin Mubadi voiced concern over the rising number of thefts targeting bodaboda riders, noting that criminals often pose as customers to steal bikes. He stressed the importance of increased security measures and community awareness to address the issue.

"These motorbikes are our source of livelihood. Many riders have worked hard to buy them, with some even acquiring them through loans," Mubadi said. "We must take all legal steps to protect our assets from these criminal networks."

The partnership with the police and Watu is expected to enable a quicker response to safeguard both property and lives. Kisumu Central Deputy County Commissioner Bosek Langat affirmed the government's commitment to fighting bodaboda theft, promising swift police action. He also cautioned bodaboda riders against collaborating with criminals, as it endangers other road users. Langat further announced plans to increase police patrols in high-risk areas.

"Security is crucial. We want bodaboda operators to assist in eliminating those who misuse motorbikes to cause disruptions within the county," he said.

Watu Regional Manager for Kisumu, Len Ogolla, shared that advanced tracking systems and security devices for motorbikes will be introduced to prevent future thefts. He encouraged riders to be vigilant about who they entrust with their motorbikes, as some criminals disguise themselves as legitimate riders.

"It’s essential to know the character of anyone you hand your motorbike to. After a long day of work, make sure it's safe and secure," Ogolla added.

The BAK initiative will also focus on community policing, working closely with stage chairpersons and boosting police patrols in areas prone to theft. A rapid response team will be formed to address theft cases quickly. Additionally, the County Bodaboda Association office will regularly hold safety seminars for riders and run awareness campaigns to encourage cooperation between the public and law enforcement agencies.
