Background

As federally owned enterprise, the Deutsche Gesellschäft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH supports the German Government in achieving its objectives in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development. The project "Promotion of Climate- friendly Cooking: Kenya and Senegal" (GCF/EnDev), co-financed by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF), Kenya's Ministry of Energy & Petroleum (MoEP) and Ministry of Health, and Senegal's Ministry of Petroleum and Energy and Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development commenced in the end March 2020 for 4 years. This project is implemented in close partnership with Energising Development (EnDev) partnership.

The Kenyan component of this project. GCF/EnDev Kenya, builds on EnDev Kenya's experiences in the cooking energy sector, The project is implementing an innovative ICS market transformation strategy in Kenya, and further improving global knowledge about ICS sector contribution to Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), It will significantly increase the number of ICS users in Kenya particularly in periurban and rural areas, The EnDev/GCF project will significantly limit consumption of non- enewable biomass in the cooking sector compared to the baseline situation, leading to greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions,

The project is implemented by MoEPi GIZ, Practical Action, Mercy Corps/Energy for Impact (E41), Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT), Strathmore University, Greenbelt Movement (GBM) and Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) — Foundation. As part of the project support to professionalize ICS supply to the market, a raft of measures has been in put in place over the past 5 years. Professionalization kits in the form of machines, tools, equipment as well as investment packages that include support with workshop constructions. provision of local content has been made available to the identified beneficiaries; The project is at an interesting stage where the handover of this support is crucial. Hand over process requires distribution of the kits to over 130 entrepreneurs, documentation of the process as per the guidelines provided in the professionalization guide developed by the project, verification of own contribution and ultimately capacity building of the beneficiaries on the use of the items handed over. With the project being in the final phase of implementation, the project is seeking to recruit for one intern position to be stationed in Kisumu to support GCF project activities in Lake Victoria and Western regions.


Responsibilities

A.   Responsibilities

  • Support project activities
    related to mechanisation of stove production centres and construction measures.
  • Support in monitoring of quality
    assurance, stove testing and innovation under the GCF project 
  • Support the implementation of
    Environment and Social Safeguards (ESS) interventions


B.   Tasks

i)      Mechanisation and construction measures for the stove production centres

  • Support with the hand over and distribution of the professionalisation kits in close coordination with the procurement team
  • In the process of hand over and distribution, ensure all the documentation as per the existing hand over protocols are observed.
  • Training the beneficiaries on the safe use and maintenance of the equipment handed over Support the implementation of construction measures for stove production centres in close collaboration with DeKUT

ii)     Environment and Social Safeguards (ESS)

  • Support the implementation of the ESS activities in line with the Environment and Social
  • Safeguards Plan (ESMP) in close collaboration with ESS Focal Point
  • Support the monitoring of the implementation of the ESMP
  • Support the cluster teams on implementation of the ESMP
  • Document and share periodically the progress and effectiveness of the ESS activities in line with the applied strategy including lessons learned and areas of improvement 


iii)    Other tasks

  • The intern shall undertake any other additional duties at the request of the management


C.   Profile Qualifications 

  • Undergraduate degree in relevant engineering field such mechanical, Electrical or mechatronics engineering


Professional experience

  • At least 1 year experience in mechanical, electrical or electronic assignment- design and production of electromechanical machines
  • At least I-year experience and practice in mechanical workshops (i.e. metalwork and use of machine tools & equipment) 


Other knowledge, additional competence

  • Good understanding of engineering principles including production, structural mechanics, electromechanical machines and thermodynamics among others
  • Proficient in any engineering design and drawing and simulation software's such as AutoCad, Solidworks, Inventor e.t.c
  • Very good working knowledge of ICT technologies (related software, phone, fax. email, internet and computer applications)
  • Excellent command of English 
  • Excellent technical/business report writing skills
  • Able to work independently and perform well under pressure (i,e, handling significant problems and tasks which come up simultaneously and/or unexpectedly and meeting deadlines)

D.   Duration of Assignment

The duration of the assignment will be from October 2024 —March 2025.


E.   Duty location

The duty location is Kisumu with frequent visits to project implementation counties in the Lake Victoria and Western regions of Kenya.
