Kisumu Prepares to Host UN World Tourism Day for the First Time

Kisumu is set to make history by hosting this year’s UN World Tourism Day for the first time next week. Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o expressed excitement about the event, noting that it will bring significant attention to the city.

The city will hold a series of events from September 23 to 27, culminating in the global observance of World Tourism Day on September 27. Organizers believe this will be an excellent opportunity to showcase Kisumu’s tourism potential, unique cultural heritage, and natural attractions.

Governor Nyong’o emphasized that hosting the event will also provide a valuable platform for local businesses and the community to engage with international visitors and stakeholders. This year’s theme, "Tourism and Peace," underscores the role of tourism in promoting harmony and development.

Nyong’o highlighted that tourism focusing on sustainability and responsible travel is crucial for preserving cultural and natural heritage, fostering peaceful coexistence between human activities and the environment. Personal interactions between tourists and locals can build lasting friendships and bridge cultural or political differences.

With its rich cultural heritage, stunning landscapes, and vibrant attractions, Kisumu is poised to make a strong impression during the UN World Tourism Day. County Minister for Tourism and Marketing, Farida Salim, described the event as a significant opportunity for Kisumu to enhance its position in the global tourism industry. She noted that the event could boost local tourism and economic growth.

Salim also remarked that attending the tourism event next week will be a memorable and enriching experience. The Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife invited 47 county governments to submit bids, and Kisumu emerged as the winner.
