Kisumu Students join teachers in demonstrations on the streets

The atmosphere in Kisumu is currently tense due to ongoing protests involving both teachers and students.

The unrest is part of a larger strike led by the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), even though the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has called off their planned strike.

KUPPET members are demanding solutions to unresolved issues, causing significant disruptions in schools, including closures and halted learning activities.

The strike has not only impacted teachers but has also drawn in students, who are demonstrating in solidarity with their educators.

These protests are part of a broader wave of unrest in Kisumu, where citizens are also protesting against the high cost of living and the recent Finance Bill.

Hundreds of residents, including youths and students, have taken to the streets, highlighting the growing frustration among Kenyans over economic hardships exacerbated by what they see as punitive taxation.

In response, the government has taken precautionary measures, including closing day schools in Kisumu to ensure student safety amid the escalating unrest.

While the protests have largely been peaceful, security forces are prominently present to prevent any potential violence.

As the demonstrations continue, there is increasing pressure on the government to address the demands of both educators and the public to restore normalcy in the region.
