Tensions have erupted among ODM leaders over allegations of favouritism in the distribution of mobilization funds for President William Ruto’s recent tour of the Nyanza region.
Several MPs have expressed their discontent after discovering discrepancies in the amounts allocated to different leaders for the visit.
A top gov't official had convened a meeting where regional representatives from Migori, Homa Bay, Kisumu and Siaya counties gathered to discuss the significance of President Ruto’s four-day tour.
However, dissatisfaction emerged when it was revealed that mobilization funds were distributed unevenly.
According to a disgruntled MP, while some received as little as Ksh 200,000, others reportedly received up to Ksh 2 million.
Another MP from South Nyanza claimed that a former legislator might have been given as much as Ksh 13 million.
The disparities have fueled frustration among some MPs, with calls for a reconsideration of their engagement with the government.
“If this is how the so-called broad-based system handles leaders from Nyanza, we may have to ask Baba (Raila Odinga) to rethink his cooperation with this administration,” one MP said.
President Ruto’s visit has been met with a mix of genuine support and organized mobilization, with some locals welcoming him for his backing of Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission chairmanship, while others were reportedly incentivized to cheer for him.
