Kisumu leaders and residents unite to celebrate Peace Day

Residents and leaders of Kisumu County gathered at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Sports Complex to commemorate the International Day of Peace, emphasizing the significance of cultivating a culture of peace for development.

Observed annually on September 21, this year’s event was themed “Cultivating a Culture of Peace.”

Deputy County Commissioner Bosek Lang’at highlighted the essential role of peace in achieving sustainable development. He urged attendees to reflect on the importance of peaceful coexistence, noting that peace is crucial for economic growth and progress.

“Peace requires respect for life, human rights, and the rule of law. There can be no peace without justice, fairness, democracy, and an appreciation of cultural diversity, even when values appear to conflict,” Mr. Lang’at stated.

He called for conflict resolution through dialogue and mutual respect, discouraging violence as a means of resolving disputes.

Lang’at also praised the contributions of government agencies and private partners, including churches, in promoting peace in the region.

Dr. Roselyne Olunga from Local Capacity for Peace International (LCPI) echoed these sentiments, stressing that peacebuilding is a collaborative effort involving communities and government. She emphasized the need for dialogue among community members to address issues peacefully and prevent loss of life.

The event, organized by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC), brought together representatives from both national and county governments, as well as various NGOs, including TINADA Organisation, Social Justice Centre Working for Peace, Lead Initiative Kenya, Act, Kenya Female Advisory Organisation (KEFEADO), Pambazuko la Wanawake Magharibi, Kisumu Progressive Youth, Nyalenda Young Turks, and The Free Pentecostal Fellowship in Kenya (FPFK) church.

Participants took part in a peace march from Kondele to the venue, planted tree seedlings, and engaged in mock sports activities to symbolize unity and coexistence.

The International Day of Peace serves as a reminder of the collective aspiration for a world where conflicts are resolved through understanding and dialogue. Kisumu’s participation reflects the county’s commitment to these values and its dedication to fostering peace and harmony within the community.
