The son of the late legendary Benga musician Princess Jully has made a heartfelt appeal for financial assistance to cover the costs of his mother’s burial. The family has been struggling after exhausting their resources on her medical treatment.
In a recent interview with Trendz Moto TV, the musician’s son, Makajully Kenya, shared the challenges they faced since his mother’s illness began, revealing how they tirelessly cared for her until her passing. He explained that the family’s financial situation worsened as Princess Jully required dialysis treatments twice a week, adding to the mounting medical expenses.
“Ever since mum fell ill, it has not been easy. I live and work in Kisumu, and with her dialysis twice a week, it was a big financial burden. We are now in debt,” he said.
Makajully, visibly emotional, also called on leaders at both local and national levels to assist in providing his mother with the dignified farewell she deserves. “We are in big debt. I appeal to our leaders, from the local to the national level, to help us. She was a national figure who bravely spoke about HIV/AIDS when no one else would. Help us give her a befitting burial without shame,” he added.
Princess Jully, a beloved figure in Kenya’s music scene, passed away on Saturday, October 12, at Migori County Referral Hospital after a long illness. Known for hits like Dunia Mbaya, Atimango, and Malo-malo, she left an indelible mark on the Benga genre. Beyond her music, she was a national voice on critical issues like HIV/AIDS awareness.
Her influence extended beyond her own career, as she nurtured other musicians, including Ohangla stars Osogo Winyo and Onyango Alemo. As the family struggles with the financial burden of laying her to rest, Makajully hopes the public and leaders will come together to honor her contributions and support them in their time of need
