At least 10 people were killed on Wednesday evening after a fuel tanker collided with two 14-seater matatus at Iguhu, Yala Bridge, on the Kisumu-Kakamega road. The crash occurred around 6:30 pm and involved three vehicles: a petrol tanker and two public service vehicles.
The fuel tanker, which was traveling from Kisumu towards Kakamega, reportedly lost control after hitting a bump, veering off the road and colliding with two matatus traveling in the opposite direction from Kakamega to Kisumu. One of the matatus was from Mitrans Sacco, and the other belonged to Transiline Sacco. Both vehicles were carrying 14 passengers each.
Witnesses reported that the tanker driver fled the scene, and his whereabouts remain unknown. Efforts to rescue the victims were made by members of the public, but sadly, 10 people died on the spot, and 20 others sustained injuries. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were transferred to Kakamega County General and Referral Hospital for identification and postmortem.
The three vehicles involved were towed to Kakamega Police Station for further investigation.
