Kisumu County is actively pursuing the development of industrial parks to boost economic growth and create employment opportunities. One major initiative is the proposed establishment of a KSh3 billion industrial park on 500 acres in Ombeyi, Muhoroni sub-county. This project, supported by the World Bank, aims to attract manufacturers in sectors such as fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, and textiles. The ultimate goal is to develop an economic zone spanning 70,000 acres, potentially providing employment for up to 3 million people.
In addition, the County Government of Kisumu has invited tenders for the construction of County Aggregation and Industrial Parks, reinforcing its commitment to improving industrial infrastructure. Furthermore, plans are underway to allocate 10,000 acres in Kisumu for Special Economic Zones (SEZs). These SEZs aim to address barriers to business operations, including high energy costs and limited transport linkages, to foster a more conducive environment for industrial activities.
These initiatives highlight the efforts of both national and county governments to position Kisumu as a leading manufacturing and industrial hub in East Africa, leveraging its strategic location and available resources for regional economic development.
