Maendeleo Market Demolished Over Structural Concerns, Temporary Stalls Catch Fire

Kisumu’s Maendeleo Market, a World Bank-funded project that was nearing completion, was demolished due to concerns over compromised construction standards. The market, which was approximately 90% complete at the time of its demolition, had been expected to provide a modern trading space for local vendors.

Following the demolition, the Kisumu County Government erected temporary mabati (iron sheet) stalls on the same parcel of land to accommodate displaced traders. However, a section of these stalls was recently engulfed in flames, raising further concerns over the suitability of the alternative structures.

The events have sparked debate among residents and stakeholders about the management of public infrastructure projects and the long-term solutions needed to support traders in Kisumu.
