Homeless of Kisumu (HOK) is a grassroots, community-driven organization working to improve the well-being and livelihoods of marginalized groups in Western Kenya. Through innovative programs in social wellbeing, sustainable livelihoods, and climate action, HOK empowers youth, women, and informal workers with access to essential services, skills training, and green economic opportunities. The Finance Intern will support day-to-day financial and administrative functions at HOK. This role offers hands-on experience in accounting, budgeting, procurement, and financial reporting in a dynamic nonprofit environment. The intern will work closely with the Finance Officer and contribute to the smooth functioning of the organization’s operations.
Key Responsibilities
Finance & Accounting Support
- Assist in the preparation and posting of financial transactions to accounting systems.
- Support bank and cash reconciliations.
- Help maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records and filing systems.
- Prepare payment vouchers, receipts, and other finance documents under supervision.
Budgeting and Reporting
- Assist in the preparation of monthly and quarterly financial reports.
- Support expense tracking and analysis of budget variances.
- Participate in internal expenditure reviews for ongoing projects.
Procurement and Asset Management
- Assist with quotations, LPOs, delivery tracking, and payment processing.
- Maintain proper records of organizational assets and inventories.
- Ensure compliance with procurement policies and donor requirements.
Audit and Compliance Support
- Help in organizing audit documentation and responding to audit queries.
- Ensure proper labeling, archiving, and retrieval of finance records.
- Support compliance checks on expenditures and transactions.
Qualifications and Experience
- A recent graduate with a Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Finance, Accounting, Commerce, or a related field.
- Sufficient understanding of financial systems and accounting principles.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and/or Google Workspace; knowledge of accounting software (e.g. QuickBooks, Zoho Books) is an added advantage.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to handle confidential information.
- Good communication and organizational skills.
- Interest in working in the nonprofit or development sector.
