Nyong’o Applauds Ruto’s Deal to Extend SGR to Kisumu and Malaba

Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o has welcomed President William Ruto's recent agreement with China to extend the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Nakuru through Kisumu to Malaba.

This major infrastructure project, part of Phase 2B of the SGR, is expected to transform Western Kenya’s economy by boosting trade, tourism, and regional connectivity.

Governor Nyong’o praised the move, saying the SGR extension has been a long-standing dream for the Lake Region. He emphasized that a modern railway will unlock new opportunities for businesses and create thousands of jobs, especially by linking the Port of Kisumu more efficiently to Mombasa and neighboring countries.

Already, the route has been mapped out from Duka Moja in Nakuru County, with Kisumu’s Mamboleo area set to host the main terminus. Substations are also planned for Sondu, Ahero, Kodiaga Prisons, and Paga Beach — meaning more local towns will benefit from this development.

In addition to reaching Kisumu, the SGR line will extend all the way to Malaba, enhancing trade links with Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This is in line with Kenya’s commitment to the Belt and Road Initiative championed by China.

President Ruto's trip to China resulted in the signing of infrastructure deals worth Ksh137 billion, covering not only the SGR but also key road projects like the dualization of major highways and the construction of the Nithi Bridge.

Construction of the SGR extension is expected to kick off in 2025, with a projected completion timeline of about four years.

If all goes as planned, Kisumu is on its way to becoming a major transport and economic hub once again!
