Tragedy in Miwani: Cane Hauler Runs Over Motorcyclist and Pillion Passenger

On Sunday night, April 27, 2025, a fatal road accident occurred in Miwani, Kisumu County, when a cane hauler truck ran over a motorcyclist and his pillion passenger. Both victims died on the spot.

The incident happened around 9 p.m. as the truck was transporting sugarcane to a nearby milling factory. Eyewitness John Otieno stated that the motorcyclist collided with the truck, which reportedly had no functional lights. He noted that many cane haulers operate at night without proper lighting, posing significant risks to other road users.

Following the crash, the truck driver fled the scene. Police have since launched a manhunt for the driver, while the bodies were taken to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations.

This tragic event has reignited concerns over road safety in Kenya, especially involving heavy vehicles and motorcyclists. According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), 1,045 motorcyclists and 372 pillion passengers lost their lives in road accidents between January and November 2024.

Authorities and safety advocates are now calling for stricter enforcement of traffic laws to ensure that all vehicles—particularly heavy trucks—are roadworthy and equipped with functional lights. There is also renewed emphasis on training and licensing for motorcyclists to reduce the number of fatalities on Kenyan roads.
