Babu Owino Joins Legal Fraternity, Frees 200 Petty Offenders on First Day as Advocate

Babu Owino Joins Kenya's Legal Fraternity, Vows to Fight for Justice

Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino, born and raised in Nyalenda, Kisumu, has officially joined Kenya's legal fraternity after being admitted to the bar on Friday. He was among 609 new advocates who took the oath, marking a significant milestone not only in his personal journey but also in his lifelong pursuit of justice and social equity.

Babu, who now holds six university degrees, including a Law Degree from the University of Nairobi, said this moment was not about prestige—but about continuing his mission to serve the underprivileged.

"Growing up in the slums of Nyalenda, I noticed with deep concern the constant harassment and humiliation of ordinary Kenyans in the brutal hands of law enforcement agencies—most of the time without a clue of what their constitutional rights were," he said.

The MP recalled painful experiences from his childhood, including watching his mother get arrested and abused for selling chang'aa to make ends meet.

"My mother got arrested severally and instead of being arraigned in court, would be beaten up by police to pay a bribe from her meagre chang'aa sales proceeds."

Now armed with legal credentials, Babu Owino said his mission to fight for justice is only getting stronger.

"This achievement is not about personal grandiosity. It is about sharpening the tools of service. The law is now a new battlefield where I will fight even harder for justice, equity, and the rights of the common mwananchi."

True to his word, Owino made an immediate impact. In a post on his X account (formerly Twitter), he revealed that on his first day as an advocate, he successfully secured the release of 200 inmates jailed for petty offenses—a powerful gesture that set the tone for his legal journey.

He also had a stern warning for the establishment:

"The Government should brace itself for more lethal arguments in defense of Kenyans—both in Parliament and now in court. Expect legal action aimed at lowering the cost of living, creating jobs, and holding systems accountable."

In a dramatic closing, Babu invoked divine strength as he steps into this new chapter:

"The revolution continues—now with a gown and a gavel. So help me God."
