Ida Odinga Girls Secondary School Becomes First Public Girls' School in Kisumu East

Kisumu East Sub-county has marked a historic milestone with the official launch of Ida Odinga Girls Secondary School on Monday, making it the first-ever public girls-only secondary school in the area.

The establishment of the school is the result of a strong community-driven initiative, backed by support from the Kisumu East Constituency National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NGCDF). The launch was celebrated as a major step forward in the pursuit of equal educational opportunities for girls in the sub-county.

For years, Kisumu East lacked a public secondary school dedicated solely to girls, a gap that often left many young women without accessible or supportive learning environments. The creation of Ida Odinga Girls Secondary School is now being hailed as a beacon of hope for families and learners who have long called for gender-focused academic infrastructure.

“This is more than a school—it’s a dream come true for the community,” said a local leader during the inauguration ceremony. “It represents what we can achieve when we come together with a shared vision.”

The school is expected to boost enrollment among girls, reduce dropout rates, and inspire academic excellence in the region. Named after Mama Ida Odinga, a prominent educationist and champion for girls’ empowerment in Kenya, the institution carries a powerful legacy of advocacy for women's rights and education.

Community members, education officials, and local leaders have expressed optimism that the new school will not only improve access to secondary education for girls but also foster leadership and long-term social change in the region.

As enrollment begins, stakeholders are calling for continued investment in infrastructure, staffing, and resources to ensure the school meets high standards and lives up to its transformative potential.
