💰 Over 200 Contractors in Kisumu Demand KSh 2 Billion in Pending Payments

Kisumu, Kenya — More than 200 contractors working with the Kisumu County Government are demanding urgent payment of over KSh 2 billion in pending bills. The aggrieved contractors say they have completed numerous infrastructure and service delivery projects, but remain unpaid—some for years.

Several contractors say the delay has driven them into financial ruin, with some blacklisted by banks over non-repayment of loans taken to fund county projects.

🗣️ Calls for Presidential Intervention

As President William Ruto prepares to begin his tour of the Nyanza region on Friday, the contractors are appealing for his direct intervention.

“We are appealing to the President to intervene and direct the National Treasury to release funds to Kisumu County so we can be paid. Most of us are on the verge of losing everything,” said one contractor.

💼 A Longstanding Issue

This is not a new concern in Kisumu. Over the past few years, the County Government has been accused of consistently delaying payments despite issuing reassurances and timelines.

According to some of the contractors, a few have received partial payments in the past, but majority are still waiting for compensation. Many fear that the ongoing situation could cripple the local construction and service sectors.

With the President expected in Kisumu on Friday for the launch of the Makasembo Affordable Housing Project, local contractors hope that their plight will finally receive the attention it deserves.
