Tragedy in Manyatta: Families Homeless After Torrential Rains Wipe Out Homes

Manyatta, Kisumu –
The aftermath of yesterday's intense hailstorm has left a trail of destruction in its wake, especially in the area behind the mosque in Manyatta. Dozens of houses have collapsed due to the combination of heavy rain, strong winds, and hail, leaving scores of families with nowhere to go and no shelter to protect them from the elements.

Residents who spoke to Kisumu Kulture expressed deep concern, with many still in shock over how swiftly their homes were brought down. "We’ve lost everything. We have children, and we’re sleeping in the cold," said Mama Achieng’, a mother of four.

The situation is dire, and local leaders are being called upon to act urgently. Community members are pleading with elected representatives, especially Members of Parliament, to step in with emergency relief, resettlement support, and a long-term plan to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

This is not the first time Manyatta has suffered from poor housing conditions being overwhelmed by extreme weather. The lack of proper drainage, sturdy infrastructure, and disaster preparedness has left many vulnerable.

Elsewhere in Kisumu, including the Central Business District, the storm also brought down several billboards due to the fierce winds, posing serious danger to city dwellers and damaging nearby property.

As the sun rises over Kisumu, the people of Manyatta are left with nothing but hope—hope that leaders will hear their cry and respond with compassion and immediate action.
