Tragedy in Nyalenda: Woman Found Dead in Suspected Suicide

Kisumu, Kenya – A cloud of grief and shock hangs over the community of Nyalenda ‘B’ in Kisumu County following the tragic death of a 53-year-old woman in a suspected case of suicide.

The incident was formally reported at Nyalenda Police Station under OB Number 29/09/06/2025 at around 7:40 pm on Sunday, June 9. The victim has been identified as Mary Njiri Nyawino, a long-time resident of the area, described by neighbors as quiet, respectful, and reserved.

According to police reports, the discovery was made by her 25-year-old son, Allan Otieno Nyawino, who had returned home from work that evening. Allan reportedly found the front door locked from the inside, which was unusual. When repeated calls to his mother went unanswered, he forced his way into the house, fearing that something might have gone wrong.

Upon entering the home, Allan proceeded to the bedroom, where he made the heartbreaking discovery. His mother had allegedly taken her own life by hanging, using a rope tied to the metal trusses supporting the roof of the house.

A statement from the police read: “The son found the deceased hanging from the rooftop using a rope. There were no signs of struggle or forced entry into the house.”

Officers from Nyalenda Police Station, including the OCS, promptly arrived at the scene accompanied by detectives from the DCI and crime scene experts. Their immediate priority was to secure the area and collect forensic evidence that might shed light on the circumstances leading up to the woman’s death.

While the authorities confirmed that no suicide note was found at the scene, they have not ruled out the possibility that the deceased may have been experiencing emotional or psychological distress.

The body, which showed visible injuries around the neck consistent with hanging, was moved to the Kisumu County Referral Hospital Mortuary for postmortem examination.

The case remains under active investigation by DCI Kisumu Central.
