One of East Africa's largest open-air markets, Kibuye Market in Kisumu, is set to undergo a major transformation. Phase 2 of the Kibuye Market upgrade will officially begin in early August 2025, a move that will affect more than 4,000 traders currently operating within the market.
Why the Upgrade Is Urgent
Temporary Relocation Details
Uhuru Business Park: The new 23-acre temporary location offers:
- 10,000 capacity with designated stalls
- Modern sanitation and water points
- Improved drainage and walkways
- Enhanced lighting and security
- KSh 10,000 stall rental fee per trader
Trader Compensation Package
The Resettlement Action Plan (RAP) includes:
- Full replacement value for lost structures
- Relocation and disturbance allowances
- Special support for vulnerable traders
- Active Grievance Redress Committee
