Spotify Adds In-App Messages — Send DMs Without Leaving the App
Spotify has launched a new Messages feature that lets users aged 16 and older send one-to-one direct messages inside the Spotify mobile app. The aim is simple: make it easier to share songs, podcasts and audiobooks without switching to WhatsApp, Instagram or other apps.
Spotify says users asked for “a dedicated space within the app to share their next favorite song, podcast or audiobook with friends and family.” Messages is rolling out this week in select markets on mobile devices and is built to make sharing — and keeping track of — recommendations more seamless.
- Tap the share icon in the “Now Playing” view, choose a friend and hit send.
- Recipients can accept message requests and reply with emoji or text.
- Suggested contacts appear from Jams, Blends, Collaborative Playlists, and Family/Duo plans.
- Users can accept/reject requests and block accounts.
- Spotify will use moderation tools and proactive detection for unlawful or harmful content.
- Messages use industry-standard encryption for data in transit and at rest.
Spotify stresses Messages won’t replace sharing to platforms like Instagram, WhatsApp, TikTok or Snapchat — it complements them to boost native engagement.
Whether Messages will become a daily habit for many listeners remains to be seen, but Spotify is betting that native DMs will increase in-app engagement and make it easier for friends to pass along the next big track or podcast episode.
