Court orders exhumation in Seme as teen killed in Muhoroni: Kisumu police probe multiple incidents
Police in Kisumu County are investigating a series of tragic incidents, including a court-ordered exhumation, a fatal youth attack, and several deaths reported across western Kenya.
Court orders exhumation in Seme burial dispute
Authorities in Seme carried out the exhumation of a 35-year-old man following a court order linked to an ongoing family burial dispute.
The remains of Joab Otieno were exhumed on April 27 at Kokello village in the presence of his mother, who is the next of kin. Police confirmed the exercise followed an order issued by the Ndhiwa Principal Magistrate's Court in case number MCCC/E016/2026.
The disagreement is between the deceased's mother, who has since remarried, and the paternal family over the rightful burial site. After the process, the body was transported to Ndhiwa Sub-County Hospital Mortuary, where it will be preserved pending the hearing and determination of the case. Police said the exhumation was conducted peacefully and without incident.
Teen killed in violent attack in Muhoroni
In a separate incident, a 17-year-old boy died following a violent attack by a group of youths in Muhoroni.
Police reported the attack happened on April 26 at around 7:00 pm near Omanyi village as a group of young men walked from Nyakunguru trading centre. The group was ambushed by an estimated 20 assailants armed with pangas.
Investigators say one of the attackers, identified as Nathaniel Abuka, allegedly injured one victim before pursuing another. The deceased later regrouped with friends while bleeding heavily.
Family members rushed him to Awasi Catholic Mission Hospital, where he received treatment but later succumbed to his injuries.
The body is being preserved at a funeral home pending a post-mortem examination. Police say investigations are ongoing and officers are pursuing leads, though no arrests have been made so far.
Drowning, electrocution and mining tragedy reported
Elsewhere, police confirmed multiple fatal incidents across the wider region.
Three people died in separate drowning incidents in Kisii, Kiambu and Kakamega counties. The bodies were moved to mortuaries pending post-mortem examinations.
In West Pokot County, a 41-year-old woman died after being electrocuted while airing clothes on a live electric wire. Authorities say such incidents have been increasing, with officials from Kenya Power linking many deaths to illegal power connections and unsafe wiring practices.
Meanwhile, in Siaya County, a miner lost his life after a shaft collapsed in Kopolo, Bondo. The victim had entered the shaft to drain water when the accident occurred. His body was moved to a mortuary pending further procedures.
Growing concern over safety and security
The incidents have once again highlighted growing concerns around safety, security, and community disputes in parts of western Kenya. Police continue to urge residents to exercise caution and cooperate with investigations as authorities work to address the rising cases.
