Maseno School is set to celebrate 120 years of academic service with the unveiling of a Sh2 billion redevelopment masterplan and the launch of a new alumni foundation.

The announcement by the Old Boys and Friends of Maseno School Foundation signals a milestone moment for the historic institution as it prepares to celebrate its legacy while planning for the future.

From humble beginnings to national influence

Founded in 1906 by John Willis, Maseno School began with only a small group of learners studying under a tree. Over the decades, the school has grown into one of Kenya's most recognised centres of academic excellence, leadership and community service.

Its alumni include prominent figures such as Kenya's first Vice President Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, who also taught mathematics at the school, former Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ng'eno, and Barack Obama Sr.

The school's location is also unique, with the equator passing directly through the campus, making it a well-known landmark in Kisumu County.

President Ruto expected at celebrations

President William Ruto is expected to attend the celebrations at the Maseno School grounds. The event will bring together leaders from both the public and private sectors.

Activities will include historical exhibitions showcasing artefacts and memorabilia, as well as performances of songs and poems by current students highlighting the school's 120-year journey.

Sh2 billion redevelopment masterplan

The highlight of the anniversary is the ambitious redevelopment plan aimed at creating a modern Centre of Excellence designed to serve future generations. The project will upgrade classrooms, dormitories and co-curricular facilities to keep the institution competitive in a changing education landscape.

The newly launched Maseno School Foundation will mobilise financial support from alumni and partners worldwide. Funds raised will be professionally invested, with returns used to support bright students who face challenges paying school fees.

Academic momentum continues

The redevelopment comes at a time when the school is already celebrating strong academic performance. Under chief principal Peter Owino, Maseno School recently recorded its best KCSE performance since 2015.

Dean of studies Patrick Mboya confirmed the improvement, noting the institution has now launched its 2026 Academic Strategic Plan aimed at pushing the mean grade beyond 11 and ensuring every learner secures a university placement.

As Maseno School marks 120 years, its leadership says the focus is on building infrastructure and opportunities that will carry the institution into its next century of service.
