A heartbreaking incident has left a family and community in shock after two children lost their lives following a house wall collapse in Nyakach sub-county in Kisumu County.
The tragic event happened late Friday night at around 11:45 pm in Kariobangi village, East Kadianga sub-location. According to local authorities, the three children were asleep inside the house when the wall suddenly gave way, trapping them under the debris.
Neighbours rushed to the scene after hearing a loud bang and desperate screams. Sadly, two of the children — aged about 14 and 10 years — were pronounced dead at the scene despite rescue efforts.
A third child, believed to be around 12 years old, survived the collapse but suffered serious injuries and was quickly taken to a nearby health facility for treatment.
Authorities launch investigations
The incident was first reported by a village elder who alerted the area chief. Security agencies responded and officers from Maraboi Police Station visited the scene together with local administration officials to begin investigations into what caused the wall to collapse.
The bodies of the two children were moved to Bethlehem Mortuary as authorities documented the scene for further assessment.
Nyakach Assistant County Commissioner Orina Dawin urged residents to cooperate with investigators and encouraged the public to report any dangerous or weakened structures that could pose a risk to lives.
Safety concerns raised in Kisumu
Residents described the incident as devastating and expressed growing concern about the safety of some homes in the area. Many fear that weakened structures become even more vulnerable during the rainy season.
Authorities say investigations are still ongoing to establish the exact cause of the collapse.
