Missing Maseno University Student Found Dead After Week-Long Search

The Maseno University community is mourning the tragic death of Julius Kamanja, a 20-year-old first-year student from the School of Mathematics and Computer Science, who was found dead after a week-long search.

Disappearance and Search Efforts

Kamanja went missing on March 15, after leaving his hostel without his phone and laptop, reportedly to buy lunch. His disappearance raised concerns among fellow students and family members, prompting a widespread search.

On March 22, his body was discovered in a forested area near the water treatment facility behind RAMs hostels, a location far from his usual residence. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, and investigations are underway.

Mental Health Concerns

Family members revealed that Kamanja had previously attempted suicide in December 2024 and had been undergoing psychotherapy sessions arranged by the university. His brother, Desmond Kiago, expressed frustration over the search efforts, citing significant personal expenses and limited police involvement until the final day.

Ongoing Investigations

Authorities are still investigating the exact cause of death. Maseno University has extended condolences to Kamanja's family and is urging students to seek available mental health support services.

The tragic incident has sparked conversations about student mental health and safety, with calls for increased support systems within universities to prevent similar occurrences.
