Kisumu Officer Arrested for Aiding Escape of Suspect in Child Exploitation Case.

Authorities in Kisumu have arrested a police officer accused of helping a suspect in a child exploitation case escape custody.

Police Constable Moses Cheserek, who was stationed at Obwolo Police Post in Kisumu East Sub-county, is alleged to have facilitated the escape of 19-year-old Jacobo Onyango Nyaminya. The suspect was facing serious charges under Section 15(f) of the Sexual Offences Act, specifically for benefiting from child prostitution, and was awaiting trial at the Winam Law Courts.

The incident unfolded on April 22, 2025, when Corporal Susan Kwach, attending a scheduled court session, discovered that Nyaminya was missing. Investigations revealed that PC Cheserek, tasked with transporting the suspect from the court cells back to the police post, allegedly allowed him to escape under unclear circumstances.

At the time of his escape, Nyaminya was either supposed to remain at Kodiaga Prison or post a bond of KSh 600,000, or a cash bail of KSh 100,000.

PC Cheserek has since been apprehended and will face charges under Section 124(a) of the Penal Code for aiding a prisoner's escape from lawful custody. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kisumu East is handling the case.

Authorities are appealing to the public for any information that could assist in the re-arrest of Jacobo Onyango Nyaminya.

This incident has raised further concerns about police accountability in Kenya, particularly in sensitive cases involving children and vulnerable victims. It also highlights the urgent need for stronger measures to prevent breaches of justice and restore public trust in law enforcement.
