Police in Awasi, Kisumu County, have arrested two women in connection with the possession of a firearm.
Detectives from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, working alongside officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Nyando, apprehended Sharon Auma and Nancy Atieno Obura following investigations.
The arrests were triggered by a WhatsApp status update posted by Sharon Auma, where she was seen posing with a Canik pistol.
"The arrest follows a report concerning Sharon Auma, who decided to spice up her WhatsApp status by posting a photo of herself brandishing a pistol and issuing a chilling warning that any man who dared to dump her would face serious consequences," police said in a statement.
Acting swiftly on the alarming post, detectives tracked Sharon to Awasi town and arrested her.
During interrogation, Sharon disclosed that the firearm was hidden at a rented two-bedroom house belonging to her friend and co-accused, Nancy Atieno Obura.
A subsequent search at the premises led to the discovery of the Canik pistol, concealed inside clothing placed in a basin under the bed, along with an empty magazine.
Officers also recovered a fake motorcycle number plate bearing registration number KMGG 805M.
Both suspects are currently in custody, awaiting arraignment as investigations continue.
Authorities have indicated that efforts are ongoing to apprehend other individuals who may be linked to the illegal possession of the firearm.
