Kenya Power has announced plans to install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in six counties across Kenya over the next year—including Kisumu. This move is part of a broader push to support the transition to e-mobility and reduce carbon emissions in the country.
Kisumu is among the selected counties—alongside Nairobi, Nyeri, Eldoret, Nakuru, Mombasa, and Taita Taveta—set to benefit from the installation of 45 new EV chargers. Kenya Power Managing Director & CEO, Dr. (Eng.) Joseph Siror, stated that the goal is to create a supportive environment for EV adoption through reliable infrastructure.
“Part of our plan is to create an enabling environment for players within the e-mobility ecosystem through provision of adequate power supply and the requisite infrastructure such as charging stations that will enable motorists to travel with ease,” said Dr. Siror.
The announcement was made during the 3rd Annual E-mobility Conference and Expo organized by Kenya Power, GIZ, and the Electric Mobility Association of Kenya (EMAK).
In Kisumu, the installation of an EV charger marks a significant step forward in sustainable urban development. As the city grows and modernizes, this infrastructure is expected to support the increasing number of electric vehicles on the road and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
Kenya Power has already installed 3 EV chargers in Nairobi, with more expected nationwide. The government's support, including tax exemptions and subsidies for EVs and related infrastructure, is helping to drive growth in the sector.
According to Kenya Power, over 9,000 EVs have been registered in Kenya so far, with a steady increase in recent years. The company sees Kisumu as a vital player in the e-mobility ecosystem and is keen to foster further uptake in the region.
The initiative aligns with Kenya’s broader climate goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 32% by 2030.
As EV infrastructure comes to Kisumu, residents can expect cleaner transportation options and a boost to local innovation in the energy and mobility sectors.
