Kisumu Port Cargo Volume Surges to 280,381MT, More Than Double Previous Year

Kisumu Port has recorded a significant surge in cargo throughput, more than doubling its volume to 280,381 metric tonnes (MT) in the 2023/2024 financial year. This marks a sharp increase from the 133,000MT handled in the previous period, highlighting the port's growing role in regional trade and logistics.

According to the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), the growth is attributed to increased handling of petroleum products, fertilizer, and other bulk cargo destined for Uganda, South Sudan, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo via Lake Victoria.

The port's revival — part of the government's efforts to decentralize transport and boost trade through inland waterways — has turned Kisumu into a key logistics hub in western Kenya. KPA Managing Director Capt. William Ruto credited the improved performance to strategic partnerships, enhanced efficiency, and investments in infrastructure and equipment.

“This growth affirms our commitment to decongesting the Port of Mombasa and promoting lake transport as a viable alternative for regional cargo movement,” Capt. Ruto said.

The Kisumu port currently supports operations of refurbished wagon ferries such as MV Uhuru I and MV Uhuru II, which are playing a pivotal role in transporting fuel and goods across the lake.

Officials now aim to surpass 300,000MT in cargo throughput in the next fiscal year, with further plans to modernize the port and introduce passenger ferry services.
