7 Kisumu Hospitals Closed in SHA Fraud Crackdown
Seven private hospitals in Kisumu County have been shut down as part of a nationwide crackdown on fraudulent claims made to the newly introduced Social Health Authority (SHA) Fund.
🔍 Key Findings:
- Facilities submitted fake patient records
- Inflated medical bills discovered
- Some billed for services never rendered
This action follows a directive by Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha, who revealed that 31 health facilities across Kenya were de-listed for dishonest billing practices.
While the government has yet to name the seven Kisumu hospitals, Ministry of Health officials confirmed they were exploiting the SHA system through:
- Creating ghost patient records
- Charging for unused medications
- Duplicate billing for single procedures
"We will not allow the Social Health Authority to be looted the way NHIF was. These facilities were using Kenyans' health as a business opportunity to siphon public funds."
— CS Susan Nakhumicha
