Kisumu Air Traffic Control Tower Construction Update | Kisumu Aviation News

Kisumu Air Traffic Control Tower Nears Completion

The Kisumu Air Traffic Control Tower is steadily advancing, marking a major milestone in aviation development for Kisumu and the wider Lake Region. Launched in September 2023, the Sh314 million project is expected to revolutionize air traffic management in Western Kenya.

Led by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) and executed by skilled Polish contractors, the tower has been designed to meet international aviation standards. Its strategic elevated location at Kisumu International Airport provides air traffic controllers with an uninterrupted 360-degree view, enhancing both aircraft safety and operational efficiency.

Construction Progress

On-site work is visibly progressing. Contractors are completing tiling on staircases and lounge areas on the 7th and 8th floors, alongside glazing installation on the same levels. Preparations are also underway for the atrium roof trusses, while interior finishes such as painting and electrical installations continue.

Government Support and Regional Impact

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo praised the project’s swift progress, highlighting the government's commitment to modernizing aviation infrastructure in Kisumu. He stated,

"This facility will not only enhance the efficiency of air travel but also open up Kisumu and the Lake Region to greater economic and investment opportunities."

The tower will allow international flights to fly directly to Kisumu, bypassing Nairobi, boosting connectivity across East and Central Africa.

Kisumu International Airport: A Regional Hub

Currently classified as a Category 3 facility, Kisumu International Airport can accommodate large aircraft and significant passenger volumes. According to Governor Anyang Nyong'o, the new tower will elevate its operational capacity, establishing Kisumu as a critical gateway for Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and beyond.

With construction now at 97% completion, the Kisumu Air Traffic Control Tower will stand as a modern symbol of growth, connectivity, and progress for the city, solidifying Kenya’s ambition to become a regional aviation leader.
