Quadruplets Named Raila, Amollo, Odinga and Ida
A Kisii woman has drawn national attention after giving birth to quadruplets and naming the newborns in honour of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga and his wife, Ida Odinga.
Vane Nyanchoka delivered three boys and one girl at Nyanchwa Adventist Mission Hospital in Kisii County, marking the first successful quadruplet birth in the facility's history. Hospital officials described the delivery as both surprising and historic.
The Quadruplets' Names:
Boys: Raila, Amollo, Odinga
Girl: Ida
A Miraculous Surprise
Speaking to the media, Nyanchoka said she had been expecting triplets based on her ultrasound scans, but a fourth "miracle baby" arrived via caesarean section. She described the birth as a blessing, noting that she is now a mother of six children, having previously delivered twins.
"I didn't expect to have four babies. I only found out after the C-section. Now I have six children, and all I can say is God is great," Nyanchoka said.
A Tribute to a Hero
The babies were named Raila, Amollo, and Odinga for the three boys, while the girl was named Ida — a symbolic tribute to the late political leader and his wife. Nyanchoka's sister, Everleen Ontweka, said the family chose the names to honour Raila Odinga's legacy, which resonated with the timing of the birth shortly after his passing.
"We just lost Raila, our hero, and we were mourning his passing when my sister gave birth. We said Raila has returned in a big way, and we were blessed with a fourth baby whom we decided to name Ida," Ontweka said.
Historic Medical Achievement
Dr. Maria Lyther, who led the medical team at Nyanchwa Adventist Mission Hospital, said the birth was unprecedented for the facility. "We have delivered triplets before, but this is the first time we have delivered quadruplets. The entire team was overjoyed," she said.
Appeal for Support
The hospital administration has appealed for support for Nyanchoka and her family, with plans to waive her medical bills. Dancun Mosiomo, a hospital administrator, encouraged well-wishers to assist the mother in raising her six children.
The quadruplets are reported to be in stable condition and under careful medical observation.
A Symbol of Hope
The birth has captured the hearts of Kenyans, with many praising Nyanchoka's gesture as a touching tribute to one of the country's most influential leaders. In a moment of both mourning and celebration, the arrival of the quadruplets has been described as a symbol of hope and continuity in a time of national reflection.
