Ruth Odinga Hints at 2027 Presidential Bid
Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga has hinted at the possibility of running for president in the 2027 general elections, signalling that her candidacy — if it happens — would be firmly rooted within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Speaking during a condolence visit at Kang'o ka Jaramogi in Bondo, where leaders and supporters gathered following the death of her brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Ruth expressed confidence in her leadership abilities and commitment to ODM's legacy.
"Nothing stops me from contesting for the presidency. I have all it takes. But first, I want to see a vibrant ODM that is a safe space for everyone," she said.
Ensuring Luo Leadership Continuity
Addressing concerns about the future of Luo leadership after Raila Odinga's passing, Ruth assured the community that the former opposition leader had laid strong foundations for continuity, including the revival of the Luo Council of Elders and the institutionalisation of the 'Piny Luo' cultural festival.
"Raila knew his time was near, and he worked to organise the community's leadership. The Luo Nation is not lost. We must do what is in the people's best interest. ODM is not dead. It is wounded, but alive, and we must keep it standing," she added.
Potential 2027 Contenders
If she formally declares her candidacy, Ruth Odinga would join a growing list of potential contenders expected to challenge President William Ruto in 2027, including former Chief Justice David Maraga, activist Boniface Mwangi, and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

- 2022-present: Kisumu County Woman Representative

Clarifying Coalition Stance
Responding to past reports that suggested she opposed ODM forming coalitions ahead of 2027, Ruth clarified that her stance had been misinterpreted. She said her focus has always been on ensuring that ODM remains united and strong before entering any political partnerships.
"I am not against a coalition between ODM and other parties. What I keep saying is that we must have one strong ODM. We have been in the trenches and we know what unity can do," she explained.
Learning from 2007 Elections
Reflecting on the 2007 general election, Ruth recalled how ODM's internal cohesion, despite the disputed presidential results, enabled the party to secure major parliamentary victories, including the Speaker's position.
"You cannot go to war without a weapon — and the stronger the weapon, the better," she said, reaffirming that rebuilding ODM's strength remains her top priority.
Ruth Odinga's potential entry into the presidential race marks a significant development in Kenyan politics, potentially continuing the Odinga family's longstanding political legacy while bringing a new perspective to the national leadership conversation.
