Accountant Job - Remote Position (Kenya Based)
Position Summary
The Accountant plays a crucial role in managing the financial aspects of our organisation. This position involves a combination of accounting responsibilities, payroll processing and tracking restricted funds. The successful candidate will ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial data and assist in financial reporting and compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting
- Maintain and update financial records (accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger)
- Ensure compliance with company financial policies
- Prepare and process journals, reconciliations and monthly management accounts
- Assist in preparation of annual budgets and financial forecasts
- Monitor and analyse financial data to identify trends and improvements
- Maintain Fixed Asset Register and depreciation of assets
Payroll Processing
- Manage organization's payroll processing for accuracy and timeliness
- Calculate and process payroll deductions (taxes, benefits, contributions)
- File statutory deductions with relevant authorities before due dates
- Address payroll inquiries and discrepancies from staff
Financial Reporting
- Assist with preparation of financial statements for the Board
- Prepare audit files and annual financial audits
- Handle restricted grant reporting as required
Restricted Funds and Grant Accounting
- Track and manage restricted funds for donor compliance
- Allocate expenses to grants and prepare grant financial reports
- Ensure accurate reporting on utilization of grant funds
- Liaise with fundraising team for donation allocation and recording
Compliance & Systems
- Stay updated with nonprofit accounting standards and tax regulations
- Ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements
- Utilize Xero accounting software (experience preferred)
- Experience with Calxa financial reporting software (advantageous)
Position Details
Employment: Full-time position
Salary: KES 225,000 - 275,000 per month
Reports to: COO
Location: Remote based in Kenya
Travel: Ability to travel within Africa when necessary
Residence: Must be resident in Kenya
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or equivalent certification is a plus
- Proven experience in nonprofit accounting and financial management
- Familiarity with HR procedures, payroll processing, and labour laws
- Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel
- Strong attention to detail and analytical skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
