New Access Road Opens to Improve Connectivity, Security and Drainage in Kisumu
Kisumu City Manager Abala Wanga has officially opened a new access road connecting the Arya and MM Shah Primary School area (Nyerere Road and Kakamega Road), in a move aimed at improving mobility, enhancing access to education, and strengthening local infrastructure.
Speaking during the launch, Wanga described the development as a key milestone in the city's ongoing efforts to open up neighbourhoods and improve the quality of life for residents, especially school-going children and their families.
The new road is expected to ease movement for learners, parents, and the surrounding community, while also improving access for essential services such as emergency response and maintenance operations. City officials noted that the infrastructure will play an important role in supporting local economic activity and long-term urban development.
In addition to improving transport, Wanga highlighted that the project will also contribute to flood management in the area. The expanded road corridor doubles as a critical floodwater collection and drainage point, helping to reduce water accumulation during heavy rains — an ongoing challenge in parts of Kisumu.
He further reaffirmed the city's commitment to expanding road networks across Kisumu, emphasizing that improved connectivity remains central to growth, accessibility, and resilience against climate-related challenges such as flooding.

The project forms part of broader urban upgrading efforts aimed at ensuring well-connected, safer, and more accessible communities across the city.
