Kenyan boxing sensation Portifas Odipo, popularly known as Majembe, has revealed he was robbed during his homecoming celebration in Kisumu, blaming poor security and disorganisation at the event.
The amateur boxer said his newly won iPhone 17 — part of his fight winnings — was stolen during the heated celebrations just days after his victory. According to Majembe, the device disappeared amid large crowds that had gathered to celebrate his return.
Celebration turns chaotic
Speaking after the incident, the boxer expressed disappointment, saying what started as a joyful homecoming quickly spiralled into confusion and theft.
Majembe blamed poor security arrangements for the chaos and revealed he was briefly arrested during the commotion before being released.
He added that several brands that had partnered with him for the event were also affected by the theft, and apologised to fans and partners for how the celebration unfolded.
Despite the ordeal, the boxer thanked residents who turned out in large numbers to welcome him, saying the reception at the airport had been warm and encouraging before things went wrong.
Majembe insisted he holds no grudge and promised to return to Kisumu in the future under better arrangements.
Victory at Vurugu Fight Night
The homecoming followed Majembe's knockout win at Vurugu Fight Night, where he defeated rival Mbavu Destroyer in a highly anticipated bout.
The fight, held on April 4 at Kasarani Indoor Arena, drew nationwide attention as Majembe sealed victory with a decisive knockout, ending a rivalry that had captivated fans across the country.
The boxer walked away with a prize package worth over Sh2.5 million, including cash, the Vurugu Championship Belt, a new vehicle from Odi Bets, a sport bike and a one-year gym membership.
What began as a TikTok feud between two young fighters had grown into a nationally followed spectacle supported by corporates, fans and political leaders. President William Ruto was among those who backed the event, pledging Sh1 million to each fighter to support their training ahead of the match.
