Police launch probe into Senator Godfrey Osotsi Kisumu attack
Kisumu, Kenya – Police in Kisumu have officially launched a full-scale investigation following a daring mid-day attack on Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi at a popular restaurant within the lakeside city. The incident occurred on Wednesday at a coffee house near Westend Mall, leaving the senator injured. He was airlifted to Nairobi for advanced treatment.
According to Kisumu County Commissioner Benson Leparmorijo, a gang of hooded assailants stormed the establishment and assaulted the senator. While unconfirmed social media reports suggest a possible love triangle, police have not ruled out political motives, especially after the senator's communication team claimed the attackers questioned his stance on President William Ruto's re-election.
The senator's bodyguard is also under scrutiny for failing to act during the assault. Siaya Governor James Orengo, who rushed to Kisumu, condemned the incident, saying: "This is making Kisumu a small Haiti, where thugs rule in broad daylight."
Kisumu Deputy Governor Mathew Owili added: "This attack is an assault on the very fabric of civility and tolerance that defines our county. Kisumu remains a bastion of order and human rights." No arrests have been made so far, but police assure residents that decisive action will follow.
What CCTV footage reveals
CCTV footage from the restaurant captures the chilling sequence: the senator repeatedly being hit by his hooded assailants. He struggles to regain his footing, only to be thrown against furniture as stunned attendants look on. Mr Osotsi was initially treated at Aga Khan Hospital before being flown to Nairobi. His Director of Communications, Derick Luvega, condemned the attack as "barbaric and cowardly," asserting that it bore the hallmarks of premeditation.
Political reactions pour in
Leaders from across the political spectrum have since condemned the assault. Siaya Governor James Orengo revealed that the senator sustained head injuries and his face was disfigured.
"This is an unfortunate incident. This is making Kisumu a small Haiti, where thugs rule in broad daylight while the police are aware." – James Orengo, Siaya Governor
Kisumu Deputy Governor Mathew Owili called on police to act with urgency, stating: "Divergence of views is not a justification for lawlessness. It is a cornerstone of democratic engagement and must be accommodated with tolerance and respect at all times."
