Small business owners in Muhoroni Sub-County, Kisumu County, have received a boost after taking part in a training programme aimed at strengthening Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

The initiative was organised by the Micro and Small Enterprises Authority in partnership with Netherlands Development Organisation to equip entrepreneurs with practical skills, policy awareness and support to help their businesses grow.

Over 50 traders trained

More than 50 local traders participated in the training under the Investing in Young Businesses in Africa – Supporting Entrepreneurial Ecosystem (IYBA–SEED) programme. The sessions focused on helping entrepreneurs scale their enterprises sustainably while understanding regulatory frameworks that affect their businesses.

💬 Nduta Ndirangu, SNV IYBA–SEED Project Manager: "This initiative is about strengthening ecosystem players and ensuring MSMEs are well-informed and actively engaged in shaping policies that affect them."

She explained that SNV is working closely with partners such as MSEA to promote the MSME Policy 2025 and the MSME Amendment Bill 2025, which aim to address long-standing challenges including access to finance, markets and regulatory barriers. She added that the sensitisation forums are being held in Kisumu, Uasin Gishu and Nakuru counties.

Focus on women and youth entrepreneurs

MSEA Senior Assistant Director of Manufacturing and Agribusiness Tabitha Gicheru said the training is part of the authority's mandate to support women- and youth-led enterprises.

💬 Tabitha Gicheru, MSEA Senior Assistant Director: "We have brought together MSMEs from sectors such as leather, textiles and agribusiness to ensure their voices are captured in the policy process."

She noted that many entrepreneurs still lack awareness of key policies and regulations, and the training aims to bridge this gap. Gicheru added that the forum is the fifth of its kind and involves collaboration with stakeholders across the business ecosystem, including the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Women Enterprise Fund.

Traders highlight ongoing challenges

Local traders welcomed the initiative, noting that many still face challenges that limit growth. Simon Ochieng, Chairperson of the Muhoroni Jua Kali Artisan Association, pointed to gaps in marketing opportunities, access to trade spaces and affordable credit.

💬 Simon Ochieng, Muhoroni Jua Kali Artisan Association Chairperson: "After producing goods, many artisans struggle to find markets. We also need designated spaces to operate from and access to loans that can help us upscale and repay sustainably."

He added that continued training and partnerships with organisations and business associations will help improve the capacity of local entrepreneurs and ensure they better understand tax and regulatory requirements.
