Heavy Rains and Strong Winds Expected in Kisumu & Western Kenya – Kenya Met Warning

Heavy Rains and Strong Winds Expected in Kisumu and Western Kenya – Kenya Met Warns

Residents of Kisumu and the greater Western Kenya region should prepare for heavy rainfall and strong winds over the coming days, according to a recent weather alert from the Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met).

In a public notice issued on Thursday, June 6, Kenya Met warned that heavy rainfall and powerful winds are expected in parts of Nyanza, including Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, and Migori counties. These conditions are likely to persist through the weekend and into early next week.

The forecast indicates rainfall amounts may exceed 40mm within 24 hours in some areas, potentially causing localized flooding. Low-lying neighborhoods, especially those near Lake Victoria, are at increased risk. Winds reaching up to 25 knots (approximately 46 km/h) are expected, particularly in the late afternoon and evening hours.

Kisumu Residents Urged to Exercise Caution

The Kenya Met Department has urged residents of Kisumu to remain vigilant and take safety measures, particularly in flood-prone zones such as Nyamasaria, Nyalenda, Manyatta, and areas near River Kibos.

Motorists should drive carefully due to reduced visibility and slippery roads caused by heavy rains. Additionally, fishermen and boat operators on Lake Victoria are advised to avoid venturing far into the lake during this period due to the risk of strong winds and turbulent waters.

What Is Causing the Sudden Weather Changes?

According to Kenya Met, the current weather patterns are influenced by moisture influx from the Congo Basin combined with the movement of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). This dynamic is responsible for the increased rainfall and unstable weather conditions in Western Kenya.

Weather Outlook for the Coming Days

Kisumu is expected to experience cloudy mornings, with sunny intervals around midday followed by heavy showers in the late afternoon. Nighttime temperatures will remain warm and humid.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates should conditions worsen. Residents are advised to stay informed by following official Kenya Met social media channels or checking weather updates regularly.

Stay safe and prepared during this period of heavy rains and strong winds. Taking necessary precautions now can help reduce risks associated with flooding and adverse weather conditions in Kisumu and the greater Western Kenya region.
