1.4 million unregistered voters in Nyanza: RC Mworoa raises alarm

📅 April 24, 2026 | 📍 Kisumu, Kenya | 🕘 3 min read

Flora Mworoa, the Nyanza Regional Commissioner, has raised concern over low voter registration in the region, revealing that more than 1.4 million residents with national identity cards have not registered as voters.

Mworoa said the situation is worsened by a large number of uncollected identification cards, with over 80,000 IDs still lying at registration offices and Huduma Centres across the six counties in the region.

💬 Flora Mworoa, Nyanza Regional Commissioner: "We have over 1.4 million residents of Nyanza Region with identity cards and without voter's cards. We are calling them to come out and register. This is purely apolitical."

Uncollected IDs continue to rise

Speaking during a meeting with engineers supporting voter mobilisation efforts, Mworoa noted that chiefs and assistant chiefs have been tasked with delivering the uncollected IDs to the village level, but the numbers continue to grow as more cards are processed.

With only days left before the closure of the enhanced voter registration drive, she linked the low turnout partly to voter apathy following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, whose influence had long driven civic participation in the region.

💬 Flora Mworoa: "It is unfortunate that we lost him, but life has to continue. That is why we are calling on our people to take advantage of this window and register."

She added that registration will continue at all constituency offices of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission even after the enhanced exercise ends.

Engineers launch data-driven mobilisation campaign

To boost registration, a team of engineers and professionals has launched a technology-backed campaign aimed at reaching the 1.4 million unregistered residents.

Led by Eng Fredrick Owino and Benard Adhiambo, the group has established a call centre to monitor voter behaviour and conduct direct outreach using data systems and analytics.

💬 Benard Adhiambo: "The narrative that you people don't have numbers must be demystified by our people coming out to register and vote."

He explained that the initiative relies on data-driven decision-making to identify eligible voters, track registration trends and deploy targeted messaging.

💬 Benard Adhiambo: "Data is the new gold. You can only maximise technology and even artificial intelligence if you have the right data."

Door-to-door mobilisation using Nyumba Kumi

The campaign also includes door-to-door mobilisation using the Nyumba Kumi structure, with chiefs and assistant chiefs given lists of residents who have IDs but are yet to register.

According to the team, daily tracking now makes it possible to monitor how many people register each day and identify areas lagging behind.

💬 Engineer Fredrick Owino: "This calls for extraordinary initiatives. Voting is not just a process—it is behaviour, and we must influence it."

With the clock ticking, the message from both county leaders and the engineer-led team is clear: register now or risk losing your voice.
