KISUMU CITY – As the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) accelerates the ongoing Mass Voter Registration drive across the country, a shocking administrative backlog threatens to silence thousands of voices in the Luo Nyanza region.

A confidential memo from the State Department for Immigration and Citizen Services, dated April 14, 2026, reveals that a staggering 80,027 national identity cards are lying uncollected across the Nyanza region.

Worse still? Almost half of those belong right here in Kisumu County.

According to the document addressed to the Regional Commissioner, Kisumu County tops the list with 32,286 uncollected IDs. Kisii follows with 14,610, Homa Bay 12,205, and Siaya 11,426.

💬 George S. Opiyo, Ag. Regional Registration Officer: "We have mobilized Chiefs, Huduma Center managers, and NRB officers to begin a frantic distribution mission. But with the Mass Voter Registration drive ongoing, time is of the essence."

The ghost of elections past

For the political culture of Kisumu and the greater Nyanza region, an ID card is not just a piece of paper. It is a weapon. It is currency. It is the key to the ballot box.

For decades, the late Raila Odinga — Baba — carried the dream of the Kenyan masses on his shoulders. He tried multiple times to ascend to the presidency, only to have the trophy snatched away. From the disputed 2007 election to the "handshake" of 2018 and the razor-thin losses of 2022, Nyanza has always had one collective cry: "Our votes are stolen."

But how can your vote be stolen if you never pick up the tool that allows you to cast it?

As we look at these 32,000 IDs gathering dust in Kisumu registration offices, one has to wonder: Is the "deep state" sabotaging us, or are we sabotaging ourselves?

Many young people in Kisumu East and West share his frustration. Another resident, a university student at Riat who asked not to be named, said: "The system doesn't tell us exactly where to go. They announce on TV but many of us don't watch TV. If they could just send an SMS, that would help."

The current crisis

George S. Opiyo, the acting Regional Registration Officer, has now mobilized chiefs, Huduma Center managers, and NRB officers to begin a frantic distribution mission. But with the Mass Voter Registration drive ongoing, time is running out.

If you are a young person in Kondele, a trader in Kibuye, or a boda boda rider in Riat, listen closely: If you registered for your ID and never went back to pick it up, you are not a voter.

Without these 32,000 IDs, Kisumu risks lowering its voter turnout numbers. Without these IDs, the region loses its bargaining power at the national table.

A call to action

Searching for "Where to collect my ID in Kisumu 2026" or "IEBC registration centers near me"? Here's what you need to know:

  • Location: Regional Registration Office, P.O. Box 1814, Kisumu (near the old post office).
  • The fix: The government has ordered chiefs and Huduma Center managers to bring IDs to villages. Don't wait for them to knock. Go to your local chief's camp today.
  • The deadline: The voter register closes soon. No ID, no vote.

The bottom line

We cannot afford to cry "vote theft" in 2027 or 2032 if we leave our firepower — our IDs — unclaimed.

The late Raila Odinga fought for the Second Liberation to give us the right to vote. Let us honor Baba's struggle. Let us pick up our IDs. Let us register to vote.
