A familiar name in Kisumu's environmental circles has taken an unexpected new direction. Rahmina Paullete, known for her work around Lake Victoria, has officially enlisted in the United States Navy, marking a major shift from grassroots activism to military service.
From fighting water hyacinth to global opportunities
Rahmina first gained recognition through her hands-on efforts to tackle the water hyacinth problem on Lake Victoria. She founded Kisumu Environmental Champions, a youth-led initiative that mobilised young people to harvest the invasive weed and turn it into useful products like furniture, handbags and coasters.
Her work drew attention beyond Kenya and placed her among young voices advocating for environmental action and youth empowerment.
A long and challenging journey abroad
Her move to the United States did not happen overnight. Rahmina has spoken openly about the long and difficult migration process, including multiple visa rejections before eventually securing permanent residency.
