Armed Suspects Nabbed as Phantom Pistol Is Recovered on Kisumu–Busia Route

A security operation in Kisumu has led to the arrest of two suspects after detectives recovered a Phantom pistol along the busy Kisumu–Busia Highway.

Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations carried out the operation following intelligence reports indicating movement of suspected armed individuals within the area.

Acting on the information, detectives staged a coordinated ambush along the highway in Kisumu, where they intercepted a black Toyota Prado, registration number KCB 411A.

Vehicle intercepted during targeted ambush

According to investigators, the vehicle was flagged down and thoroughly searched after being stopped by officers deployed at the strategic point.

Inside the car, detectives recovered:

  • A Phantom pistol
  • A machete concealed in a black sheath
  • Three mobile phones

Authorities believe the items may have been linked to criminal activity and are now being treated as key exhibits in the ongoing investigation.

Suspects taken into custody

The two occupants of the vehicle were identified as Evans Otieno Ongere and Abel Onyango Owuor.

They were immediately arrested and escorted to Maseno Police Station where they are being held pending processing and arraignment in court.

Police confirmed that the vehicle and recovered items have been detained as evidence.

Security operations intensified in Kisumu

The arrest comes amid heightened security operations in Kisumu and surrounding areas, where law enforcement agencies have stepped up patrols and intelligence-led interventions after a spike in violent robbery incidents

Authorities say the renewed focus is aimed at curbing the circulation of illegal firearms and addressing emerging security threats along key transport corridors.

Investigation ongoing

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has confirmed that investigations are ongoing to establish the source of the firearm and possible links to other incidents.

The suspects are expected to be arraigned once processing is complete.
