About the Projects
IHEA Project (Innovating Horticulture in Eastern Africa)
Funded by the Gates Foundation and implemented in Ethiopia, Uganda and Kenya. IHEA aims to develop and implement inclusive Contract Farming (iCF) schemes and strengthen key horticulture sector associations to address market-level bottlenecks.
YEA Project (Youth Employment in the Agri-Food Sector)
Commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by GIZ in partnership with the Kenyan Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development (MoALD). The objective is to support sustainable income and employment opportunities for young people, especially women, in Western Kenya counties including Bungoma, Kakamega, Kisumu, Siaya and Vihiga.
Key Responsibilities
Under IHEA (70%):
- Lead planning and implementation of inclusive business models through iCF schemes
- Coordinate selection of high-potential agribusinesses for iCF schemes
- Engage industry stakeholders across avocado, irish potato and onion value chains
- Lead promotion of relevant services and technologies for farmers
- Provide strategic perspective on emerging horticulture sector trends
- Represent GIZ in workshops, conferences and stakeholder meetings
- Support financial management of Kenya service package
Under YEA (30%):
- Support implementation of scaling roadmap for iCF
- Organize meetings with County government leadership on anchoring, scaling and handover
- Advise on market-oriented value chain development
- Support preparation and implementation of follow-on project appraisal
Required Qualifications
Education:
- Master's degree in Agribusiness, Business Administration or related fields
- In-depth familiarity with private sector ecosystem in Kenya
- Strong familiarity with GIZ "inclusive contract farming" approach
Professional Experience:
- 8 years in agricultural value chain development
- 6 years in private sector development
- 3 years in inclusive contract farming/inclusive business models
- 6 years in international development projects (preferably with GIZ)
- 4 years working in Western Kenya
Other Competencies:
- Strong negotiation skills in complex settings
- Excellent coordination and communication skills
- Proven experience with cross-sectoral stakeholders
- Fluency in English and Swahili
- Good knowledge of MS Office, MS Teams
